Memorial services for George Faver, 76, of Portales will be at 11:00 AM, Fri., May 18, 2018 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales with Rev. Wesley McAfee officiating, assisted by Rev. Mark McAfee. Honorary pallbearers will be Virgil Jones, Simon Medina, Otis Floyd, Ed Buerkley, Robert Curtis, Harry Heckendorn, Bill Curry, Jimmy Roberts, Kenny Walker, Stanley Bilberry, Miguel Barrera, Dan Bell, Mark McAfee and Duane Lee. George Allen Faver was born July 16, 1941 in Raton, NM to the home of Hester (White) and Ross Faver, and died May 6, 2018 in Clovis, NM after a lengthy illness. He graduated from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, CO in 1959. Following graduation, George attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. On July 16, 1961 in Canon City, CO, he was married to Shirley Hurd. In 1963, George graduated with a BS in Vocational Agriculture.
George taught high school Vocational Agriculture in Sutherland, NE for a time, and then in 1966 he moved to Capulin NM and later Tucumcari, NM where he ranched and farmed until 1982. In 1987, George became a loan officer at the Federal Land Bank in Colby, KS. He retired in 2003, and at that time he relocated to Raton, to continue operating Faver Ranch Partnership. After suffering a stroke in 2011, he and his wife moved to Portales to be closer to family.
Throughout his lifetime, George had enjoyed traveling and going fishing. He and his wife used their camper to take all but one of their seven grandchildren to Yellowstone National Park. Never one to be idle, he enjoyed tinkering in his shop. After retiring, George reconditioned and restored several antique John Deere tractors. He also did quite a lot of woodworking and metal work. In later years he really enjoyed cooking on his outdoor grill. He was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He is survived by Shirley, his wife of nearly 57 years of their home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Kim Faver of Portales; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Dale Briscoe of Seminole, TX and Randi and Kirk Holzmeister of Monument, KS; seven grandchildren, Dr. Kyra (Dustin) Perry of Hobbs, NM, Mason Briscoe of Dallas, TX, Tanner (Taylor) Faver of Portales, Casey Faver of Artesia, NM, Lane Faver of Portales, Shyanne (Chris) Griggs of Oakley, KS and Cole Holzmeister of Monument, KS; a great-grandson, Ian Griggs; a brother, Sydney (Wilma) Faver of Alamosa, CO and a sister, Patsy Enax of Raton, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Hester (White) Faver and a granddaughter, Mackenzie Holzmeister.
