Funeral services for Callie Wood-Langston, 93, of Portales, will be 2:00 PM, Fri., Jan. 25, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley McAfee officiating, assisted by Rev. Brad Morgan. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Ben Pritchett IV, Garrett Wood, Mason Pritchett, Dusty Tipton, Charles Pyle and Van Nation serving as pallbearers. Matthew Johnson along with her other family members and many friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Callie Mae Wood-Langston was born June 19, 1925 in Olton, TX to the home of Callie Frances (Williams) and John Henry Thomas, and died Jan. 21, 2019 in Portales, NM. In 1933, the family moved to Ropesville, TX where she attended school. In 1941 the family moved to Portales, and she finished school in 1942. On July 11, 1942, she was married to Cullen Wood. Later that same month he entered the US Army. They lived in Colorado Springs for 18 months before he was sent to Camp Roberts, CA and from there was shipped to Europe in June of 1944.
Callie returned to Portales and began training as a nurse. Callie nursed in Portales for 36 years. The first 20 years of that career was in doctor’s offices. Through the years she had worked for Dr. Brasell, Dr. Lehman, Dr. Altizer, and Dr. Buttram among others. The last portion of her time was spent working as a Nurse’s Aid with her friend, Myra Jacobs in the Portales schools.

The Woods had three children, two daughters and a son, and enjoyed more than 57 years of marriage before his death on Aug. 21, 1999. On Aug. 24, 2001, in Lubbock, TX she was married to Dewey F. Langston. Callie was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She enjoyed fishing, and bowling as well as traveling and visiting with family.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Joel and Michelle Wood of Tulsa, OK; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Jean and Van Nation of Portales; five grandchildren, Cara (Dustin) Tipton, Matthew (Tabatha) Johnson, Caron (Ben) Pritchett IV, Garrett Wood and Sarah Wood; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Murl Thomas of Grand Junction, CO and Johnny Thomas of MN; and a sister, Aliene Boyd of Delta, CO. Callie was also survived by her dear friend of over 55 years, Sue Harmon. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Calvert and Bill Thomas, three sisters, Annabelle Gamble, Garnetta Tomlinson and Juanita Hatfield, a daughter, Cathey Jane Wood who died at age 5 in 1959, her husband, Cullen Wood and her second husband, Dewey F. Langston who died Mar 28, 2006.
