Funeral services for Alice Gossett, 88, of Portales, NM will be at 2:00 PM, Thurs., Feb. 22, 2018 at the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ with David Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Floyd Cemetery with Brent Gossett, David Gossett, Jess Gossett, Cole Gossett, Kendon Gossett, Heath Gossett, Wade Elliott and Lloyd Rector serving as pallbearers. All of Alice’s family and many friends will be honorary pallbearers.


Alice Ann Gossett was born Jan. 22, 1930 at Dereno, NM to Goldie and Henry Elliott, and died Feb. 17, 2018 in Lubbock, TX. Alice grew up on the family farm on the mesa west of Floyd, NM. She attended school at Floyd, and graduated in 1948. Alice went on to study at Eastern New Mexico University, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. In the mid 1970’s she earned a Master’s Degree as well. For most of her teaching career, Alice was an art teacher in the Portales elementary schools, retiring in 1988.
On Dec. 3, 1951 in Roswell, she was married to Travis Gossett. They made their home west of Portales where they reared their family. Alice was a faithful member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. She was well known for her paintings and drawings. She enjoyed quilting, and had made many beautiful quilts for family and friends. Alice was an excellent cook, and there were many family favorite recipes. She also liked working crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp.
She is survived by three sons and a daughter, Jeff Gossett of Wolfforth, TX, Gregg Gossett of Portales and John and Lisa Gossett of Ft. Stockton, TX and Kathy and David Sanderson of Abernathy, TX; five grandchildren, Jess Gossett and his mother, Yvette Ferran, Cole Gossett, Kendon Gossett, and Hannah and Heath Gossett and their mother Marian Gossett; a brother, Tommy Elliott of Meade, KS; six sisters, Lois Cavasos of Moriarty, NM,Joan Goyne of Portales, Betty Gossett of Floyd, Rose Rector of Floyd, Burma Stark of Portales and Mary Burch of Blacksburg, VA; a sister-in-law, Trelma Elliott of Moriarty and a brother-in-law, Gene Olmsted of Powell, WY. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John Henry Elliott and Wayne Elliott and two sisters, Irene Marshall and Natalie Olmsted; and by her husband, Travis Gossett who died Sept. 21, 2003.
