My name is Achilles. I am a mixed breed pupper, and about 2-3 years old. People may think I look mean but I’m really a sweetheart who loves chin and belly scratches. I am a bit traumatized by recent events that brought me to the animal shelter, but if you have the time and patience to work with me, I’ll be sure to be a loyal and loving companion. You see, I was abandoned by my family. I spent days waiting for them to come back but they never did. I was found being attacked by another dog and it took everything the nice people who found me had to help me get free and to safety. That is why I am needing a loving home without other dogs until I have enough time to decompress and learn how to be cared for and adored the way that I deserve. I know with time, patience, and training that I can learn to trust again. I just need a chance to show you how much of a lovebug I can be.
Paws and kisses,
Achilles

The Portales Police Department provides full-service animal control to all residents within the Portales city limits. Animal Control Officers attend state certification classes and are trained to handle calls for service that involve domestic animals or wildlife. The Division provides patrol service six days per week and may be called out after hours in case of an emergency.
All dogs and cats kept within the city limits must get a Portales city license. This license can be picked up at the Animal Shelter. Owners should bring proof of vaccination for their pet(s). The license costs $5.00 per year. In addition to the individual animal registration, Animal Control is responsible for issuing Domestic Livestock, Residential Multi-Animal and Commercial Permits.
