Thirteen County Elected Officials Retire from the Board
LAS CRUCES, NM – New Mexico Counties (NMC) recognized 13 departing county elected officials for their outstanding leadership and dedication to New Mexico Counties and the citizens of New Mexico at the NMC Board of Directors meeting held in Las Cruces, NM on Thursday, September 29, 2022. The Board members honored for their service include:
• Catron County Commissioner Anita Hand(serving two years)
• Chaves County Commissioner Will Cavin(serving three years and as the Western Interstate Region (WIR) representative)
• Lea County Commissioner Rebecca Long(serving seven years)
• Lincoln County Clerk Whitney Whittaker(serving one year)
• Luna County Commissioner Linda Smrkovsky (serving seven years)
• McKinley County Commissioner Billy Moore (serving one year)
• Mora County Commissioner L. Frank Maestas (serving three years)
• Otero County Assessor Steve Boyle (serving six years and as a president of NMC)
• Santa Fe County Commissioner Henry Roybal (serving three years)
• Sierra County Sheriff Glenn Hamilton (serving five years)
• Socorro County Commissioner Manuel Anaya (serving five years)
• Taos County Commissioner Jim Fambro(serving five years)
• Union County Commissioner Justin Bennett (serving five years and as the Western Interstate Region (WIR) representative)
Members of the NMC Board of Directors meet six times annually and attend numerous legislative hearings, public meetings, and set policy direction for NMC, which represents all 33 New Mexico counties. Over the last several years, the pandemic compelled the Board to meet virtually and eventually move into hybrid meetings with in-person meetings most recently.
The New Mexico Counties is a non-profit, nonpartisan association representing New Mexico’s 33 counties since 1936. Its mission is to strengthen New Mexico counties’ ability to govern their own affairs and to improve the well-being and quality of life of their constituents.
