Santa Fe – The Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department’s (EMNRD) Forestry Division will hold a news conference on Monday, March 28, 2022, to recognize Southwest Wildfire Awareness Week in New Mexico. EMNRD Cabinet Secretary Sarah Cottrell Propst and representatives from multiple partner agencies will acknowledge the importance of cross-jurisdictional collaboration in fighting wildland fires.
Despite recent moisture, drought conditions continue to plague the entire state. This, combined with a warming climate, and a buildup of fine fuels will put hundreds of communities and thousands of people at risk from wildfire in 2022 and beyond.
The Forestry Division and its local, state, federal, and tribal partners will discuss current fire concerns and send an important and timely message: “Don’t wait for wildfires to start, prepare and be aware,” urging New Mexicans to do their part to help prevent wildfires where they live, work, and recreate.
