Memorial services for Nellie Hern, 84, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Wed., May 24, 2017 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Tammy Jaffe officiating. Nellie Grace Hern was born June 14, 1932 in Pecos, NM to the home of Frances (Aragon) and Samuel Clay Hern and died May 18, 2017 in Portales.
As a young girl for a period of time Nellie was employed as a maid for Miss Greer Garson. Later she worked in a dry cleaning establishment in Clovis. For many years, Ms Hern was employed as a flag person for Cutler Repaving Co. directing traffic on road construction sites.
Ms Hern enjoyed crocheting, and gave many of her creations to her family and friends as gifts. She also was a quilter. In more recent times, Nellie enjoyed going to the casino in Ruidoso. She was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9515 in Portales.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul and Yvonne Garcia and Sam Garcia of Portales; two daughters, Teresita Tanaka of Dillingham, AK and Estella Garcia of Portales; six grandchildren, Anthony and Andrew Garcia, Sam (Sunnie) Garcia, Jr, Nathan (Martha) Garcia, Jeremy Tanaka, and Frances Garcia; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter Garcia and Dillon Watson. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Gus, Ed, Fred and Samuel Hern and three sisters, Cora Johnson, Nora Aragon and Edna Garcia.
