Monte Chris Weems, known to virtually everyone as Chris, or even “One Leg Weems,” was born Dec. 23, 1948 in Clovis, NM to the home of Ruth (Terry) and Wesley Callen Weems, and died at his home on the morning of Feb. 21, 2022. Chris was injured in an accident as a teenager, and lost his leg. He graduated from Portales High School in 1967. On June 2, 1968, he was married to Janice Evetts in his parents’ home. For more than 25 years he worked as a supervisor at all of the local peanut mills. In addition, for more than 30 years, he and his wife operated a kennel, breeding and selling Siberian Husky, Cocker Spaniel and Dachshund puppies.
In the late 1990’s, Chris went back to school, and graduated with honors in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion and Psychology. A devout Christian, Chris served as worship leader in several local Baptist churches, including the Bethel Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist, Calvary Baptist and Forest Heights Baptist Church in Clovis. For many years he served as a Sunday School teacher for the University Baptist Church where he was a member.
Among the things that Chris enjoyed was reading. He was always interested in history, and loved to read The Biblical Archeology Magazine and the National Geographic. Music was always a love of his, and especially the Christian music of the 80’s and 90’s, as well Native American Flute music. He also was a stamp and coin collector, and had very special stamps for various family members.
