PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer becomes the first team in program history to defeat two nationally ranked opponents in the same season following a 2-0 victory over #3 Fort Hays State Sunday afternoon.
The Hounds controlled the momentum from the opening kick as they snapped the Tiger’s 14-game regular season win streak following goals by defender Joaquin Borruel and midfielder Gabriel Peres. The Hounds defense did a fantastic job limiting the 2018 National Player of the Year Santiago Agudelo, holding him to just three shots.
With 20 minutes remaining in the first half, midfielder Charlie Hackshall sent a perfectly placed corner kick into the box and found Borruel who out-jumped the Tigers defenders and headed he ball into the back of the net. The second goal came off a free kick from 20 yards out as Peres bent the ball into the top left corner in the 51st minute.
Goalkeeper Ross Dalton earned his second shut-out of the season and finished with five saves. Eastern out-shot the visitors 12-11 and totaled nine shots on goal. ENMU’s defense turned in another strong performance and kept the Tigers forwards from finding any type of offensive rhythm.
The Green and Silver will look to repeat their results as the undefeated squad will travel to St. George, Utah on Friday, Sept. 13 as they face Dixie State at 7:30 p.m.
