Men’s Basketball  Jose Montoya

PORTALES, N.M. – The squeaky sounds of sneakers and dribbling basketballs are set to hit Greyhound arena next month as head coach Brent Owen and ENMU men’s basketball head into the 2022-23 season.

This year’s schedule features 14 matches at Greyhound Arena, 14 away/neutral site games, and an exhibition against a Division I WAC opponent.

The Greyhounds will head to Phoenix for an exhibition against Grand Canyon (Oct. 28) in Phoenix to begin the year.

“Exhibition games against quality D1 opponents are hard to come by. Everyone wants to give their team a chance to play in those environments,” said head coach Brent Owen. “We are grateful for the opportunity to compete at Grand Canyon University which has become widely known as one of the best atmospheres in college basketball.”

Regular season play begins with a pair of games against RMAC programs hosted on the campus of New Mexico Highlands. The Hounds will face Fort Lewis College and NMHU in Las Vegas.

The home opener for ENMU will be on November 17 with Eastern hosting Navajo Tech for Youth Day. All kids are encouraged to come support the Hounds as they play in front of a home crowd for the first time during the season. The two teams will battle two days later at Clovis High School on November 19 for a neutral site contest.

Eastern New Mexico finishes nonconference action with two home games over Thanksgiving week. The first will be against Northern New Mexico (Nov. 23) and the following match will be versus the University of Southwest (Nov. 26).

The Hounds will then head into a 22-game conference schedule, which features a home-and-home with University of Texas Permian Basin, Angelo State, Cameron, Midwestern State, Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico.

Senior night will be February 21st with ENMU hosting in-state rival Western New Mexico. The Hounds finish the season two days later with a rematch against the Mustangs in Silver City on February 23rd.

“The LSC will be loaded once again. Last year the 12th seed in the LSC tournament received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. That is unheard of and speaks to the difficulty this league brings at you each and every night, ” said Owen. “From my perspective, in watching who teams have recruited this off-season, it certainly looks like the teams near the bottom have improved and the teams near the top have continued to bring in some of the most talented players in the country. Taking that into account along with the addition of two more conference games to the schedule ensures that it will be a dogfight for the top spot in the LSC.”
