Obituary for La Verne Stark
Services for LaVerne Stark, 97, formerly of Portales, will be at 11:00 AM, Sat., Sept. 23, 2017 at Wheeler Mortuary with Scott P. Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery.
LaVerne was born Aug. 25, 1920 in Beckham County, OK to the home of Alma Sarah (Jackson) and Clyde Otto Hill, and died in Albuquerque, NM on Sept. 18, 2017. She grew up on the family farm in Oklahoma. By 1950, she was living in Pampa, TX where she met Lynn Stark. They were married there in Pampa on Nov. 18, 1950. They soon moved to El Paso and later to Albuquerque, before coming to Portales in the mid 1960’s to become the new owners of C&T Auto Supply. LaVerne was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business. They retired in the early 1980’s.
LaVerne was active in the Portales Altrusa club for many years. She and her husband were members of the Conestoga Good Sams and enjoyed many trips with their friends. LaVerne was an avid gardener, and always raised a large garden with a wide variety of vegetables for canning and freezing. She also was an accomplished seamstress. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church for as long as she lived in Portales. In 2006, she moved to Albuquerque to be near her daughter and son-in-law.
She is survived by a son, Donald Stark who makes his home in the Philippines; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Steve Comeau of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Jesy and Justin Stark and Timothy Comeau; four great-grandchildren, Felicia Stark, and Evan, Caleb and Matthew Comeau; and three sisters, Dorothy Thomas, Louise Paty and Janice Williams all of Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, William “Jack” Hill, a sister, LaVeta Smith, a grandson, Matthew Comeau and by her beloved husband, Lynn Stark, who died April 15, 1990.
