City Council Profile: Eldon Merrick

by Hayley Nations

In light of recent events: the water restrictions, the canceling of public meetings, and the movement of City Hall, many Portales citizens are wondering what they can do to improve the current situation. In response to the aforementioned issues, three new contenders are running for city council. Eldon Merrick is running for Ward C.

What made you choose to run?

Eldon is not happy with the current situation in our community. “What we have been doing is not working and I want to do what I can to change that,” he says.

What issues are you most passionate about?

The current big issue on Eldon’s mind is the water crisis. He states that there are other issues to address, such as infrastructure issues and street deterioration, but the importance of the water makes it front and center in his priorities

In regards to the current water crisis, what are some solutions or ideas that you are willing to try?

Eldon believes we need to be diligent in the community’s search for other sources of water. He believes that a lot of the current solutions: Ute Water project, private entities taking over, etc. could take years before the problem is brought under control. He believes that the city needs to be reaching out to other irrigated farms and purchase water or water rights.  He believes the city needs to conserve water as much as possible, as well as, “finding ways to utilize our effluent water that are not being utilized currently.” He suggests repairing leaks, ensuring efficient work on wells, and partnering with farmers and dairymen to come up with solutions.

What qualities do you have that you believe will make you a good city councilor?

“I have a desire to see this community survive and prosper! I want this community to work together to accomplish its goals and renew a sense of pride that is disappearing from us,” answers Eldon. He shows his pride and love for the community while answering the questions. He is no stranger to leadership roles and handling crises. He has worked as a volunteer EMT and firefighter, as well as the operator of the Causey Water Association. He was a plant manager for ten years, then later got into real estate. He is currently on the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce board and will become the president of the board next year.

Is there anything you want to add?

“We have some of the best people anywhere, right here in this community,” he says, reminding any Portales citizens to learn from the past and look to the future to improve the community and accomplish great things.
