Graveside Services for Wanda (Roberts) Reed, 87, will be held at 2:00 PM, Tues., Aug. 31, 2021 in the Portales Cemetery with her grandson, Rusty Roberts officiating, assisted by Betty Roberts. Her family members will be honorary pallbearers.
Mary Wanda (Roberts) Reed, known to everyone as Wanda, was born Oct. 27, 1933 in Arch, NM to the home of Blanche Leah (Wallas) and Holbert Shirley, and died early on the morning of Aug. 27, 2021 in Clovis, NM. When she was seven years old, the family moved to the Floyd community where she grew up. On Oct 15, 1952 she was married to Estel Roberts. She made her home in Floyd until 1989. Wanda was a high effort woman. As a young woman, she was a farmer’s wife and a homemaker. Her home was open to visitors. Hot meals, laughter and a cozy bed were always available. Birthday cards, calls and help to family and friends were an important part of her routines. She wanted folks to know she cared.
Wanda was tough, though. Estel was injured in an accident, and she became more than a homemaker. They had 80 sows and 300 feeder hogs to care for. Although family and friends stepped up with help, much hard work fell on Wanda. She not only managed mothering 5 rowdy kids, but kept the farm going as well. She fought difficulties with tenacity and a sense of humor.
Mr. Roberts preceded her in death in 1983. On April 15, 1996, she was married to Ray Reed. They made their home in Logan. Mr. Reed also preceded her in death in 1998. Hardships like losing her husbands, and later a son and a daughter were hard, but she moved on with grace and laughter.
Wanda loved dancing, especially western dancing. She often went to senior dances as many as four times a week. For the past several years she has enjoyed the companionship of Gerald Shavor. She and Gerald lived simply. They hosted friends for game nights and meals. Hours were spent around the dining table playing Yahtzee while teasing and joking. Wanda’s home was a warm place to be, no matter her stage of life. Wanda was a lifelong member of the Baptist church.
She is survived by her loving companion, Gerald Shavor of Clovis; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Kelley Roberts of Portales, Russell and B. J. Roberts of Lovington, and Marvin and Mona Roberts of Portales; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Delman Shirley of Clovis; and three sisters, Doris Brown and Peggy Sue Gaynor both of Chandler, TX and Judy Kay Clark of Brownsboro, TX; as well as her very special friends, Hope Martinez and Vickie Hartfield and her precious dogs, Tiny and Sadie. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Albert Shirley, four sisters, Alice Collins, Arlene Griffith, Marie Hatch and Barbara Goddard, a stillborn grandchild and by her two husbands.
