Mary Geneva Dendy, known to virtually everyone as Geneva, was born Mar. 16, 1934 in Ira, TX to the home of Ethel Mae (Dever) and William Oren Dever, and died peacefully at her home in Portales on May 20, 2021. The family moved to Portales in 1947. Geneva worked at the College Drug Store as a soda jerk until she married Jack Dendy on Dec. 4, 1954. For many years she not only reared her own two children, but also provided childcare for countless other children for more than 40 years. Through the years, she not only cared for the children of numerous family members, but also for the children of college students, friends and neighbors and church members. In addition, she faithfully helped with her own children’s school activities, as well as Bluebirds, Campfire, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Geneva was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, and was always involved in Ladies’ Bible Studies and in the preparation of church dinners. She was especially known for her delicious green chili chicken enchiladas which she provided for virtually every meal. For relaxation, she enjoyed crocheting and doing a number of other craft projects.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Vici Dendy of Clovis; her daughter and son-in-law, LeNeva and Mike Madden of Portales; eight grandchildren, Rachel Dendy, Chris (Katie) Dendy, Mecca (Justin) Fowler, Amanda (Allen) Cantrell, Kayla (Tim) Vines, Shayla (Michael) Crowder, Haley Madden and Kenzie (David) Aguirre; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Nelda amd Joe Hayhurst of Ruidoso Downs, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and John Brumfield and by her beloved husband, Jack Dendy, who died on their 64th wedding anniversary, Dec. 4, 2018.
