Mary Alice “M.A” (Holland) Jewell August 4, 1937 ~ March 16, 2025 (age 87)

The family of Mary Alice Jewell will host a memorial gathering to share food, stories and remembrances of her life at 1:00 PM, Thurs., Mar. 20th at Little Old Little New, 1354 N. Chicago in Portales.

Mary Alice Jewell was born Aug. 4, 1937 in Portales to the home of Vivian Beatrice (Cross) and Clyde Wayne Holland, and passed from this life on the morning of Mar. 16, 2025 at Coronado Care Center in Portales.  The family would like to extend special appreciation to the staff of Coronado Care Center for the loving attentive care over the past few months of her life.

Mary Alice or M.A. as everyone knew her, was a ranch woman all her life.  She happily spent her entire life on a ranch west of Floyd.  Mary Alice and Fred E. Jewell were married in Portales on May 14, 1954.  As a ranch wife and mother, she worked hard and enjoyed strong ties with family and friends.  Mrs. Jewell always enjoyed traveling, as long as there was a casino at the end of the journey.  A family friend described her as a “hoot and a firecracker.”

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Stephanie Jewell of Portales and a daughter and son-in-law, Tarla and Lawrence Sanchez of Nogal, NM; four grandchildren, Sunnie (Sam) Garcia, Chase (Suzy) Jewell, Jake (Myranda) Sanchez and Cody (Amanda) Sanchez; seven great-grandchildren, Hunter Garcia, Audrey and Lauren Jewell, Lathan and Leiyo Sanchez, Dejah (Rodolfo) Gomez and Elisio Sanchez; four special great-grands, Sydnee, Cane, Brandi and Zia; and one great-great-granddaughter, Iris Chevelle Gomez.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clyde Wayne Holland, Jr. who died Jan. 1, 2023, an infant son, Garry E. Jewell and by her beloved husband, Fred Jewell, who died Sept. 4, 2009.
