Maria Micaela Gardea Alvarez March 31, 1943 ~ December 19, 2022 (age 79)

The Rosary for Maria Gardea Alvarez, 79, of Portales, will be recited at 9:00 AM, Fri., Dec. 23, 2022 at St. Helen Catholic Church.  Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Fr. Francisco Carbajal at 10:00 AM.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Mario Cabral, Hector Cabral, Enrique Cabral, Felipe Alvarez, Adrian Alvarez, Martin Serrato, Jr. and Lorenzo Cabral serving as pallbearers.

Maria Micaela Gardea Alvarez was born Mar. 31, 1943 in Durango, Mexico to the home of Maria de los Angeles Alvarez and Juan angel Gardea, and died Dec. 19, 2022 in Portales.  She lived in Mexico until 1978 when she moved to Portales.  For a time, she worked at the Borden Peanut Mill.  For most of her adult life she was a homemaker.  She enjoyed working in her yard and knitting and crocheting.  Maria had made ponchos for all of her granddaughters.  She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church.

She is survived by three sons, Lorenzo Cabral, Mario Cabral and Hector and Erika Cabral all of Portales; one daughter, Ofelia and Felipe and Alvarez of Portales; eleven grandchildren, Martin Serrato, Jr., Saul Serrato, Marisela Serrato, angel Serrato, Adrian Alvarez, Adalee Alvarez, Enrique Cabral, Sergio Dominguez, Ruby Cabral, Hector Cabral, Jr. and Erik Cabral; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leopoldo Gardea of Chicago, IL and Jesus Gardea of Durango, Mexico; and three sisters, Esperanza Segovia of Juarez, Mexico, Delores Gracia of Menasha, WI and Juan Gardea of Appleton, WI.  She was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters including a brother, Pio Gardea, and a sister, Manuela Gardea; two sons, Martin Serrato and Felipe Serrato who died as a small child, a daughter Marisela Cabral and by a grandson Lorenzo Cabral, Jr.
