Graveside services for Maria Sotelo, 92, of Hereford, TX will be held at 2:30 PM, Sat., Dec. 4, 2021 in the Portales Cemetery with Ernesto Cantu officiating.  All of her grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.

Maria Diaz Sotelo was born Nov. 1, 1929 in Alpine, TX to the home of Isabel (Hernandez) and Alfredo Diaz and died on the morning of Nov. 29, 2021 in Hereford, TX. Mrs. Sotelo lived in Mexico until the late 1940’s when the family came to the United States. In 1946, she was married to Manuel Sotelo. They lived in southeastern New Mexico and the Midland/Odessa area until moving to Portales in the early 1960’s. In the late 1980’s she moved to Hereford, TX. While living in Midland, she had worked as a cook and dishwasher in a local restaurant. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and had produced numerous beautiful pieces through the years. She also enjoyed watching television shows about sewing, as well as reading. Most of her reading material was of a religious nature. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by two sons, Frank Sotelo of Houston, TX and Jesse Sotelo of Muleshoe, TX; six daughters, Veda Villanueva of Morton, TX, Natalie Casas of Portales, Meta Gonzales of Hobbs, NM, Josie Stoelo of Hereford, TX, Rose Vital of Seminole, TX and Ida Sotelo of Hereford, TX; 30 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jesus Diaz of Midland, TX; and a sister, Ofalia Galindo of Kansas City, MO.  She was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters, two sons, Manuel and Hector Stoelo, two sisters, Beatrice Hernandez and Christy Sotelo and by Mr. Sotelo who died in 1993.
