Manuel Garcia Obituary

The Rosary for Manuel Garcia, 88, of Portales, will be recited at 9:00 AM, Fri., April 11, 2025 at St. Helen Catholic Church.  the Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 AM with Fr. Francisco Carbajal officiating.  Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery with Mark Montoya, Matthew Garcia, Mark Pena, Michael Garcia, Jesus Acosta and Lupe Garcia serving as pallbearers.  Michael Pena, Frank Huerta and Joe Garcia have been named as honorary pallbearers.

Manuel Navarette Garcia was born Sept. 4, 1936 in Presidio, TX to the homeo fo Natalia (Navarette) and Pedro Garcia and died Sun. evening, April 6, 2025 in Portales, NM.  Mr. Garcia grew up in Valentine, TX.  Later he moved to Saragosa, and it was there that he met Esparanza Chavez.  The couple was married on Oct. 19, 1953 in Pecos, TX where they continued to live for several years.  In 1970, they relocated to the Floyd community, and Mr. Garcia worked on farms in the area until 1982, when he went to work at Sandhill Produce Co.  In 1987, he began working for Oppliger Land and Cattle Co.  He retired in 1998.

Mr. Garcia had a green thumb, and enjoyed gardening.  He was a Dallas Cowboys fan, and also liked to watch boxing matches on television.  Another of is areas of enjoyment was his love for music, particularly Mariachi.  He would often watch bands perform on You Tube, and he also played the guitar.  He loved to eat, and among his favorites were his wife’s homemade tortillas and her delicious red chili.

He is survived by three sons, Joe Garcia of Portales, Guadalupe Garcia and his fiance, Rosa Sosa of Las Cruces, NM, and Abel Garcia and his wife, Latricia Sanchez of Clovis; four daughters, Gloria Huerta and husband, Frank of Portales, Cruz Lopez of Odessa, TX, Carmen Pena and husband, Michael of Portales and Rebecca Montoya and husband, Mark also of Portales; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Domingo Garcia of Carlsbad, NM.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Pablo and two sisters, Catalina and Cruz Garcia, a son, Pedro Garcia, and two daughters, Socorro Olivas and Natalia Garcia, and by his beloved wife, Esperanza who died Dec. 23, 2021.
