Reflections by Sandy Fields

I do a lot of thinking about China lately.  Like the time they were having “missile drills” near Taiwan because Taiwan dared to have elections… and I was flying to Taiwan to visit a friend, being advised against it by our Navy Seal friends.  Or what a lovely and free city Hong Kong was when we spent a Christmas week there… still part of the UK.

Or how the Japanese tourist women reacted to the little baby shoes I was painting and selling in my gift shop on Guam.  With disdain they would almost toss them back onto the shelf when they turned them over and read “Made in China”, then would raise their eyebrows at me.  Lesson learned.. scrapped those shoes and purchased little tennies made in the USA.

This Communist country now thinking they’ll take down the NBA because an American voiced his support of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong… Wow! Time for me to do my part and proudly proclaim my love of FREEDOM! And perhaps, like those Japanese women in my gift shop, be more selective in things I purchase.

Editors Note:  This post struck a chord with me when I read it.  With the recent store closing announcement of Beals combined with all the empty spaces around the square, maybe it is time for us to all be a little more selective in our purchases.  As OUR TOWN loses more and more shops, maybe it is time to stop complaining and take action, at the very least lets shop home first!  And as far as politics go…. we should put our $ where our mouth is!
