After ending the 2021 season with a postseason bid, Eastern New Mexico volleyball has been selected 13th in the 2022 LSC Volleyball Preseason Poll, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The preseason poll is voted upon by coaches and representatives across the league.
Last years 2021 LSC Tournament Champion and South Central Region Champion, West Texas A&M, were picked ahead at the top of the poll with 707 total points and 21 first place votes. Angelo State was just behind with 699 total points and 11 first place votes, and UT Tyler rounded out the top-three spots with 680 total points and seven first place votes.
In addition to the poll, three individuals were selected for preseason awards. WT’S Torrey Miller was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, TAMUK’s Nicole Murff earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors, and the Lady Buffs Blair Moreland was tabbed Preseason Setter of the Year..
Returning for the Greyhounds, Mikaela Garvin was named 2021 LSC Volleyball Freshman of the Year after suppling 213 kills and a team best hitting percentage (.252) in their first year with the program. Qitana Sapiga is returns after suppling 363 assists the season before (2nd on team), while Daejia Rodriguez and Gracelyn Stubbs also return to the program after leading the team defensively. Rodriguez supplied a team best 2.98 digs per set last season and Stubbs added program high 85 blocks in 2021.
Last season, the Greyhounds finished with a 7-19 record, including winning six of it final nine games of the regular season to earn a postseason bid into the 2021 LSC Volleyball Championship. This season, Eastern will have eight contests at Greyhound Arena as part of a 16 game conference schedule, including its opening conference match against Oklahoma Christian on Sept. 16 in Portales.
The Greyhounds begin the season in Odessa, Texas as part of the Dr. Steve Alcinena “Iceman” Invitational, hosted by UT Permian Basin. ENMU will take on University of the Southwest (N.M.) and UTPB on opening day of on Aug. 26, at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively. The following day, Augustana and Southeastern Oklahoma State will line up to face Eastern, beginning at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Aug. 27.
