Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced that today, the Honorable Judge Drew D. Tatum sentenced Lloyd Edwards to the maximum sentence of six years in prison for Voluntary Manslaughter.
The case arose from an incident on January 18, 2023, when Edwards called 911, reporting that his wife, Roxie Edwards, was bleeding from a stab wound to the neck. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers encountered multiple inconsistent statements from Edwards regarding the circumstances of the incident. Roxie Edwards was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that a knife containing the victim’s blood was found in Edwards’ possession. The jury found Edwards not guilty of second-degree murder, which carried a potential 15-year prison sentence, and instead convicted him of the lesser-included charge of Voluntary Manslaughter.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Tatum remarked:
This was a totally shocking case to me… My greatest sympathies go out to the family for the loss of their mother, sister, and grandmother… I have seen very little to no remorse from Mr. Edwards… It appears that the victim was stolen from her family… Defendant’s criminal history is extensive.
The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Quentin Ray and Assistant District Attorney Anthony Jaimes. The defendant was represented by Jacob Ort and Dallas Alfarro from the Law Office of the Public Defender.
