Linda Connelly Obituary

Funeral services for Linda (McCain) Connelly, 69, formerly of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Sat., Sept. 21, 2024 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Don Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Michael Connelly, Richard Connelly, Avery McGregor, Jason McGregor, Devon Gideon and Joshua McGregor serving as pallbearers.

Linda (McCain) Connelly was one of a set of twin girls born Nov. 9, 1954 in Portales to the home of Sammie Jo (Chalk) and Koie McCain and passed from this life very suddenly at her home in Amarillo, TX on the morning of Sept. 6, 2024.  Linda grew up in Portales and was a 1972 graduate of Portales High School where she was active in the Library Club and the National Honor Society.  Following high school, Linda attended ENMU, where she earned an Associates Degree as an Administrative Assistant.

On Oct. 26, 1974, she was married to Steven Connelly.  They first made their home in Amarillo.  While living in Amarillo, Linda worked several years at American Quarter Horse Association before becoming a homemaker to raise her two children.   In 1980, they moved to Enid, OK for a brief time and then to Fort Worth, TX where they lived until 1997.  While living in Fort Worth, Linda worked as a teacher in a Mother’s Day Out program, and later in the Registrar’s Office at TCU.

In 1997, they relocated to Portales to make their home.  While living in Portales, Linda worked for a time at the Income Support Office and later at CYFD.  For more than fifteen years, Linda worked in the county courthouse as Deputy County Clerk.  She had been retired for about ten years.  Approximately three years ago, she and her husband moved to Amarillo to be near family.

Linda and her husband were very strong supporters of all their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  Whatever team their son was playing for or was coaching could rely on their complete support and could always be counted on for whatever help was needed.  For many years they were members of the ENMU Bench Club, and enjoyed countless hours of fellowship with the other members.

Linda was a very doting and loving mother and grandmother.  She was constantly searching for ways to bless her family.  She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, and was constantly getting small gifts for different family members.  When grandchildren were small, she made them cookies.  When they got older, and cookies were not as much of a draw, she would call them to tell them that she had their “Green Cookies.”  (Translation:  money.)

She is survived by Steve Connelly, her husband of just short of 50 years of their home; her daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jason McGregor of Amarillo, TX; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sara Connelly of Fort Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Avery, Audrey and Joshua McGregor and Cannon and Reagan Connelly; and two sisters, her twin sister, Glenda Gideon and her partner, John Runyan of Artesia, NM and Delores Gentry of Woodburn, OR.  She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
