RICHARDSON, Texas – After leading the Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team’s defensive efforts in a pair of home victories in the Lone Star/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Challenge last week, sophomore post player Alivia Lewis was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday.
On Friday night’s 66-38 victory over New Mexico Highlands, Lewis led the defense that held the Cowgirls to just 26-percent shooting from the floor and 22-percent from the three-point arc, which included an 18-percent mark from the field and didn’t allow a single three-pointer in the second half. The Hounds also forced 32 turnovers, which was the most forced turnovers the Greyhounds have forced in a single game since Nov. 2, 2005, when ENMU picked up an 87-52 win over Western New Mexico.
Lewis had a career game against Highlands, setting a new personal best mark with four steals and tied her career-best 11 rebounds while also recording three blocked shots.
In the Hounds come-from-behind 58-55 win over Fort Lewis on Saturday, Lewis was a vital part of the defense that limited the Skyhawks to just 38-percent shooting from the floor and 29-percent from the three-point arc. The defense was especially stifling in the second half, as Eastern held FLC to just 33-percent from the floor and 17-percent from the arc as well, limiting Fort Lewis to just eight points in the fourth quarter.
Eastern out-rebounded the Skyhawks by a 44-35 margin in the contest, thanks to Lewis’ team-leading nine rebounds and contributed seven points off the bench.
The win also snapped the Hounds nine-game losing streak to the Fort Lewis, as their last win over the Skyhawks came on Nov. 26, 2005 in a 71-50 win in Canyon, Texas.
The Greyhounds will be back in-action on Saturday as they will travel to Abilene, Texas for a 5 p.m.game against Abilene Christian.
