TA’ QALI, MALTA – Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer standout Daniel Letherby has been selected to the Under-19 Malta squad for the upcoming UEFA Under-19 European Championships, in an announcement by the Malta Football Association Thursday afternoon.

Letherby was selected to the 20-player squad chosen by Under-19 Maltese National Team Coach Antonio ‘Toze’ Mendes. Malta’s U-19 Squad is making their first appearance in the competition, earning an automatic bid to the tournament finals as the host nation. Malta join Portugal, Poland, and Italy in Group A, while Iceland, Greece, Norway, and Spain make up Group B. Malta begin the tournament on July 3, when they clash with Italy at the National Stadium beginning at 9 p.m. local time (1 p.m. MST).

“All of us here are very proud of Daniel for his high achievement both on the pitch and in the classroom,” said Head ENMU Men’s Soccer Coach Brandon Misuraca. “He truly embodies what it means to be a high performing student-athlete. We are very excited to watch him represent his country at one of the most prestigious youth national team competitions,” said Misuraca.

With the Greyhounds, Letherby was an integral part of the ENMU squad for their first season following re-instatement. The midfielder played in six games after overcoming injury in the beginning of the season. In those six games, Letherby logged 411 minutes on the field with a full 90 minutes in a pair of games.

The UEFA Under-19 2023 Championships, hosted by Malta, begins on Tuesday, July 3, with the final to be contested on July 16. Eight teams will make up two groups of four teams, with each team playing three group stage matches. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with the winners moving onto the final.
