Closing Out-of-State Tax Loopholes
A couple of measures making progress in the legislature would attempt to capture unrealized out-of -state revenue are making progress. SB 264 would require large out-o-state sellers to pay gross receipts tax, something which big online companies currently avoid. Another measure, HB 266 closes loopholes on online rentals, like for instance AIRBNB which doesn’t currently pay lodger’s tax.
Quieter on Some Fronts
After lots of noise about potential cuts to Public Education and a possible raid on the Permanent Fund for Early Childhood programs made the news the last couple of weeks the news there seems to have calmed slightly. Those fights aren’t likely to go away anytime soon as the budget wrestling match continues.
Gun Control Poll
Last week local social media exploded with talk about HB 50 which proposes background checks for transfer of firearms between individuals. This would close the so-called gun show loophole. The debate is rancorous on this item with accusations of the push being backed by big money from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
