The Portales Animal Shelter is FULL of un-claimed or given up for adoption dogs and cats. With the spring flowers also comes litters and litters of un-planned and un-wanted pets. Many times both the mother dog and all the puppies will be turned in to the shelter by owners. And almost always these un-planned litters will end up at the shelter either as puppies or a later on in life.
Many of these animals have been at the shelter for many months and are in dire need of a forever home. With space already limited and very few adoptions, euthanasia is inevitable for many of these animals. Please make the right choice this spring and adopt from the Portales Animal Shelter. And make the even better choice to spay or neuter the pets that you already have.
The Portales Animal Shelter is in need of dog beds (those that are raised off the floor) , toy, collars and leashes. They are always in need of volunteers to help around the shelter.
If you are interested in helping to start up a spay and neuter fund for our shelter animals, please send us your contact information to therooseveltreview2016@gmail.com. We will be in touch!
Animal Shelter is open:
Monday – Saturday from 9:00 am – 3:00 PM
Closed on Sundays and City Holidays
The Portales Police Department provides full-service animal control to all residents within the Portales city limits. Animal Control Officers attend state and national certification classes, and are trained to handle calls for service that involve domestic animals or wildlife. The Division provides patrol service six days per week and may be called out after hours in case of an emergency.
All Animal Control Officers with the Portales Police Department are nationally certified through the National Animal Control Association. In addition, the Animal Control facility, and all of the Animal Control Officers, were the first in the State to be licensed by the New Mexico State Animal Sheltering Board.
All dogs and cats kept within the city limits must get a Portales city license. This license can be picked up at the Animal Shelter. Owners should bring proof of vaccination for their pet(s). The license costs $5.00 per year. In addition to the individual animal registration, Animal Control is responsible for issuing Domestic Livestock, Residential Multi-Animal and Commercial Permits.
The Department encourages responsible pet ownership and has many dogs and cats that are available for adoption.
