Graveside services for Karen McDermott, 55, of Portales will be held at 10:30 AM, Fri., June 4, 2021 in the Portales Cemetery with Pastor Don Hay officiating, assisted by her son, Michael McDermott. Michael McDermott, Chad Jackson, Andrew Ashcraft and Anthony McDermott will serve as pallbearers.
Karen Lynn McDermott was born June 1, 1965 in Salina, KS, and died May 31, 2021 at her home. She grew up moving from place to place until 1980 when they settled in Portales. On July 17, 1981 she was married to Michael Dwayne McDermott. To their home were born three children, two daughters and a son. In the early 1980’s she worked at the Tower Twin Theater. For several years she was employed as a waitress at El Rancho Restaurant. Later, Karen attended Eastern New Mexico University as well as taking some classes at Clovis Community College to earn an Associate’s Degree. For the last several years she had worked as a substitute teacher in the day time, and at night as a cashier at the local Wal-Mart. Karen was a devoted mother and grandmother, and loved her family very much.
She is survived by her son, Michael McDermott of Logan, NM; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Chad Jackson of Logan, NM and Megan and Andrew McDermott-Ashcraft of Portales; five grandchildren, Sarah Lynn McDermott, Anthony Michael McDermott, Gage Edward Jackson, Alexis Marie Jackson and Axle Dwayne Ashcraft; her father, Kenneth Stanton of Blanchard, OK; a sister, Tina Stanton of Blanchard, OK and a step-sister, Vickie. She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Lynn Stanton, four step-sisters, Doris, Carla, Jackie and Elizabeth, her father-in-law, Deryl McDermott and by her husband, Michael Dwayne McDermott who died Nov. 2, 1998.
