Obituary
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Judith A. Short, our loving and devoted grandmother, mother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on January 12, 2022. She left us while at home, in Portales, NM, surrounded by her loved ones only 10 days after her 80th birthday. Born in Pasadena, TX, Judith traveled to New Mexico with a friend where she met her husband Cecil Dwaine Short when she was 18 years old. They married two weeks later and were married 62 years before Cecil passed away in November 2020. Judith completed her Bachelors degree in Social Work from ENMU in Portales, NM and worked a short time as a social Worker for state of New Mexico.
Judith was the beloved mother of Jimmy Thomas married to Susan Thomas, David Short, and Debra Vanous. And proud grandmother of Jerame Short married to Echo Short, Ashley Thomas, Meagen Alonso, and Tiffany Garcia married to Greg Garcia. Even prouder Great Grandmother of Ethan Short, Alexis Castillo, Dorian Short, Elizabeth Castillo, Cecilia Chavez, Kyrianna Short, Daniella Alonso, Tayley Garcia, Lilianna Alonso, Calleigh Garcia, and Teagen Garcia. She was predeceased in death by her devoted husband Cecil Dwaine Short, both of her parents, her son David Short, her daughter Debra Vanous, and sister Ruth Anne Powers. She lived a full life as a wonderful mother, mentor, and dedicated member of the Methodist Church in Portales, NM. She loved to spend time with her family and attend all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s events at school and in the community. She volunteered anytime she was needed at her church.
Her closest friends were her fellow church members and she taught Sunday School for several years until she was unable to continue attending church. She loved everyone she ever met and never met a stranger. To everyone she was Grandma no matter who they were. She was able to make anyone feel loved and special with her huge heart. Most of all she loved her family and friends and instilled good values in her children and grandchildren that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A memorial will be held at a later date when family is able to come together to celebrate such an amazing beautiful woman.
