Judith Ann (Haxton) Mowrer October 24, 1959 ~ October 13, 2023 (age 63)

Funeral services for Judy Ann Mowrer, 63, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Oct. 21, 2023 at the University Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Robert Encinias, Timothy Smith, Joe Kelting, John King, Mike Madden and Kelly Ashcraft serving as pallbearers.

Judith Ann (Haxton) Mowrer, known to most people as Judy, was born Oct. 24, 1959 in Warsaw, NY to the home of Beverly (McCracken) and Charles R. Haxton, and died Oct. 13, 2023 in Clovis, NM. Judy lived in Perry, NY with her parents until age 11 when the family moved to Bear River, Minnesota.  At age 14, Judy met her future husband, Eddy Mowrer, at her brother’s wedding in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

At age 18, Judy moved to Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where she completed her high school education.  While in Siloam Springs on May 20, 1978, Judy married Eddy Mowrer.  The couple welcomed their first son, Jeffery John Mowrer in 1979 while living in Arkansas.  Second son Russell Edward Mowrer, joined the family in 1980 when the family moved to Tucumcari, NM.  Clifford Alan Mowrer was born to Judy and Eddy in 1986 in Tucumcari, completing their family.

Judy learned to play guitar and was an excellent singer.  She loved gospel and country music.  She accepted Jesus at an early age and used her musical ability to minister to others.  She sang in trucker’s ministry in both Tucumcari and Springer, New Mexico.  She often sang in church, not only in the choir but beautiful, inspiring solos.  She was musical talent for a weekly radio show in Raton, NM.  Judy was a prolific songwriter and wrote songs about Eddy, other family members and the beautiful Tucumcari Mountain.  In 1986, Judy traveled to the Philippines as part of a mission team for the Tucumcari First Baptist Church, where she shared the gospel through music.  Since living in Portales, she has been a member of the University Baptist Church.

Judy’s ministerial talents were not limited to music.  She was a talented artist and painted wildlife and landscape scenes which she often gave as gifts to friends and family.  She painted the “Welcome to Broadview, NM” sign which is still on display.  Judy also loved to sew and make clothes for herself, her family and others.

She worked as a cashier at different businesses in Clovis, Portales and Tucumcari.  She was most proud of her work as a Certified Nurses Aide at Dr. Stephen Evans’ office in Tucumcari, where her compassion and love were displayed to every patient.

Surviving to remember Judy are her husband Eddy (Portales), sons Jeffery and wife Michelle (Las Cruces, NM), Russell and wife Heather (Rossville, Kansas), Clifford (Portales); two grandchildren, Noah and Destiny of Amarillo, Texas; six siblings: brother Charles B. Haxton (Cook Minnesota), sister Marianne Violette (Natchez, Mississippi), sister Jo Ann Edblom (Elizabethtown, Kentucky), brother Stephen Haxton (Amarillo, Texas), sister Rebecca Ann Johns (Oak Grove, Virginia), and brother James Haxton (Long Island, New York); as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.  Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Beverly Haxton.
