Funeral services for Johnny Rains, 67 of Roswell, NM will be held at 2:00 PM, Mon., Nov. 8, 2021 in the Elida Baptist Church with Rev. Herb Gage officiating. Burial will follow in the Elida Cemetery with Jake Clay Banister, Trent Wood, John Hagen Rains, Colt Higgins, Mike Jones and Gary Clay Rains serving as pallbearers. Hallie Rains, Kimberlee Rains and Chad Tillman will act as honorary pallbearers.
Johnny Wayne Rains was born Sept. 13, 1954, in Lubbock, TX to the home of Billie Don (Hodges) and John A. Rains and died on the afternoon of Nov. 3, 2021 in Roswell, NM. Johnny grew up in Elida where he was known for his skill on the basketball court. He graduated from Elida High School in 1972, and went on to attend South Plains Junior College on a basketball scholarship. On July 14, 1973, he was married to Shirley Garner. Together they had two sons and a daughter. On Sept. 3, 2004 in Roswell, he was married to Jane Shoemaker. He was a member of the Elida Baptist Church.
For a number of years he remained in Elida where he ran the Rains Well Service. In addition, he was active on the Elida Volunteer Fire Dept. where he became a Captain. In addition to the well service he also drove trucks. When he left Elida, he moved to Nacodoches, TX where he began driving full time. In 1999, he was living in Roswell, and became the Warehouse Operator Manager for the Eastern Division of the Dodson Lumber Co. He retired from that position in 2017 after 18 years. Johnny and his wife “flipped” houses for several years to supplement their income.
Mr. Rains is survived by his wife, Jane of their home in Roswell; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Clay and Bandy Rains of Portales; a daughter, Misty Rains and her fiance, Chad Tillman of Portales; six grandchildren, Hallie Rains, Colt Higgins, Jake Clay Banister, Trent Wood, Kimberlee Rains and John Hagen Rains; his mother, Billie Rains of Elida; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie Lynn and Herschel Dixon of Elida and Terri and Dale Hymes of Lubbock, TX; three nieces; and by his best friend, Mike Jones of Roswell. Johnny was preceded in death by his father, John Rains, a son, Justin Rains who died Dec. 13, 2015, and by a nephew Matthew Hymes.
