Obituary
A funeral service for John W. Chavez, 68, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Joe Montoya officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Rudy Chavez, Randy Chavez, Delma Lozano, Roger Chavez, Jolene Salazar and Leon Chavez. Military honors will be performed by the Portales American Legion. There will be a rosary service at 4:00 PM, Monday, November 2, 2020 at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
John William Chavez was born June 19, 1952 in Roswell, NM to the home of Maria Antonia (Rodarte) and Herminio Chavez, and passed from this life on October 29, 2020 in Amarillo, TX.
John lived most of his life in Portales. He served in the United States Army for four years in Germany and at Fort Bliss. John loved painting and reading and would never miss his daily exercise routine. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing his guitar. He was a member of the choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Clovis. John’s little red truck was his pride and joy. He washed and cleaned it every day. He loved to spend time with his family and friends.
Mr. Chavez is survived by his children, Anna Marie Chavez of Santa Fe, Gabriel Chavez and wife Adrienne of California, Jason Chavez and wife D’Ann of Keller, Texas, Santana Chavez of Albuquerque and Chaz Chavez of Oberlin, Kansas; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; four brothers, Rudy Chavez and wife Becky of Rio Rancho, Randy Chavez and wife Liz of Portales, Roger Chavez and wife Maria of Portales and Leon Chavez of Midland, TX; two sisters, Delma Lozano of Midland, TX and Jolene Salazar and husband John of Amarillo; numerous nieces and nephews; his special friend, Kathy Mead “Sister Red”, and his Furry Friend Max.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Noel Chavez.
