James E. “Jim” Bass was born on December 5, 1929 in McAdoo, TX to the home of Ioma (Herring) and Bradford Bass, and departed this life on June 25, 2019 at age 89 in Portales. When he was 7 they moved to Morton, TX where they farmed. He grew up helping on the farm and attended Morton ISD. There he enjoyed football, roping, boxing and an occasional class. After the death of his mother they moved back to McAdoo. It was then where he met his soul mate. He married Neva Phifer and like two crazy kids they began life together. Jim made his living as a telephone lineman, trouble shooter and engineer for Alpha Construction Co. in Tulsa, OK. This took them to many states in the mid-west from south Texas to North Dakota. After retiring from construction they moved to Dalhart, TX and bought a donut shop and bakery. There Jim said the work really began. After 16 years they moved to Portales in 1991.
Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years Neva Bass; two sons and a daughter, ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Joe and two brothers, Gene and baby Lamar.
During this time Jim would remind you of “God’s Promise”
God never promised, A life without pain. Laughter without tears or sun without rain.
But He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way,
And for all who believe in His Heaven above He rewards their faith in His everlasting love.
