Sargent Jace Bulls, known to most people as “Jace,” and to some others as “Just Jace,” was born May 15, 1958 in Portales to the home of Margaret “Margie” (Durham) and James Bulls, and died Dec. 6, 2020 in Portales. Jace lived his entire life in Portales, graduating from Portales High School in 1976. Following graduation, he worked at a variety of jobs including for an oil survey company, AMPI and IGA before going to work at the New Mexico Highway Dept, where he worked from 1983 until 1990. At that time he became the custodian for Steiner Elementary School, and retired from that position in 2013. After retiring, he established Jace’s Lawn care, and did lawn mowing and various other related jobs for numerous clients in the area.
On Aug. 24, 1983, in Portales, he was married to Dorothy Valdez. He and his wife were saved at the Word of Life Ministry. Recently, they had attended Faith Christian Family Church in Clovis. Jace enjoyed having a good time, whether it was playing a practical joke, drinking coffee with his friends, playing blackjack or pool or on the racquetball court or the tennis court. He loved to make people smile. He truly had a servant’s heart, and really had a hard time turning anyone down that needed his help. Jace was a doting grandfather, and loved to take his grandchildren to Wal-Mart or Costco, or turn the radio up loud and jam out with them. They loved to hear his stories about his childhood and growing up. In addition, Jace liked to play his guitar, and make the endless loaves of Amish Friendship Bread.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of their home; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Sara and David Meeks of Portales and Jessica and Corey Jackson of Lubbock, TX; five grandchildren, Emalyn and Hannah Meeks and Kobie, Cohen and Rose Jackson; two brothers, Shane Bulls of Lubbock, TX and Roc Bulls of Amarillo, TX; and a sister, Harmony Hardin of Lubbock, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Melody Hodges who died in 2016.

I remember Mr. Bulls from Steiner. The kids just loved him and he worked hard to keep the school in tip top order. My condolences to the entire family.
