Obituary

The Rosary for Ignacio Cuevas, Jr., 52, of Portales, will be recited at 9:00 AM, Mon., Mar. 7, 2022 at St. Helen Catholic Church.  Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 AM with Fr. Francisco Carbajal as Celebrant.  Pallbearers will be Tommy Maestas, Johnny Baltazar, Joel Baltazar, Enrique Cabral, Ramon Castillo, Ignacio Cuevas III and Harvey Cuevas.  Cassandra Jean Maestas will serve as an honorary pallbearer.  Visitation for Mr. Cuevas will be from 8:00 AM to 8 PM Friday, Mar. 4, 2022 at Wheeler Mortuary.

Ignacio Hernandez Cuevas, Jr. was born Jan. 17, 1970 in Pecos, TX to the home of Juana (Hernandez) and Ignacio Cuevas and died at his home in Portales on Sat., Feb. 26, 2022.  He attended school in Pecos, TX until moving to Portales in 1986.  Growing up he played baseball.  He enjoyed watching football, and was a Dallas Cowboys fan.  In addition, he had several hobbies.  Ignacio was a talented painter and artist.  He also did a number of crafts, making Rosaries and crosses, and collected antiques and knives.

Mr. Cuevas loved his children and grandchildren very much.  Ignacio valued quality time and cherished his time with his family, and always enjoyed family get-togethers.  He always enjoyed time with his children, but most especially valued precious moments with his grandchildren.  As an adult, he worked in construction pouring concrete, and served as foreman over the concrete finishing crew.  He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church.

His is survived by three sons, Harvey Cuevas, Enrique Cabral and Ignacio Cuevas III all of Portales; four daughters, Cymantha Cuevas and husband, Ramon Castillo of Clovis, Esmeralda Cuevas and Aubriana Cuevas of Portales and Jazalyn of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren, Isabella Castillo, Miguel Castillo, Adyanna Armenta, Selena Cuevas Luciano Cuevas, Isaiah Cabral, Nevaeh Carbajal, Nya Carbajal, Nyema Carbajal and A. J. Carbajal; three sisters, Ana and Joel Baltazar of Portales, Josefina and Tommy Torres of Lubbock, TX and Connie Cuevas and husband, Rene Florez. He was preceded in death by his father, Ignacio Cuevas and his mother and step-father, Juana and Tranquilino Martinez.
