Osteoporosis is a condition where bones have less density and are not as strong as normal bone. Unfortunately, women often do not realize they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture.
Risk factors include: being female, having a small body (under 127 pounds), having a family history of osteoporosis, being over 65 years old and being white or Asian (African American and Hispanic women are also at risk).
All women age 65 and older should get a bone density scan to screen for osteoporosis.
Those with increased risks factors, such as previous fractures, menopausal, or medical conditions associated with osteoporosis, should begin at age 50.
If you are approaching menopause or are post-menopausal you should get a bone density test. To assess your risks or to get a DEXA screening, call us for an appointment.
