Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Tres Segler announced a challenging schedule for the 2017-18 season. The Greyhounds open the season against USA Today Preseason No. 1 and Division I powerhouse, Arizona in an exhibition game on Nov. 1 after the Wildcats advanced to the Sweet 16 a year ago. It marks the first time in program history ENMU has challenged the No. 1 team in Division I in an exhibition contest.

“Every year we go into scheduling with excitement,” Segler said. “We have been blessed this year with the opportunity to play Arizona in one of our exhibition games. We are extremely honored to go to Tucson to face the Wildcats.”

Following the trip to Tucson, ENMU takes on Fort Lewis and New Mexico Highlands in Albuquerque as part of the LSC/RMAC Challenge on Nov. 10-11. After the trip to the Pit, the Hounds head to Western Oregon to face off with Dixie State and Azuza Pacific on Nov. 17 and 19. Before the Green and Silver open Lone Star Conference action, ENMU closes out the November non-conference slate with a trip to Austin, Texas, to match up with St. Edward’s and Dallas Baptist on the 24-25.

“I also wanted to increase our Division II games this year,” Segler added. “We’re excited to go to Albuquerque, the West Coast and then Austin for three Division II Classics. In order to make the NCAA Tournament, you need to play tough non-conference opponents. I’m excited about the opportunities that face us this year.”

Eastern returns to the friendly confines of Greyhound Arena on Nov. 30 for the LSC opener against defending-champion, Texas-Permian Basin, and hosts rival West Texas A&M on Dec. 2. After a road trip the following weekend to Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton, ENMU goes to Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Christian on Dec. 12 and 15, respectively. The Hounds return to Portales on Dec. 19 to take on Regis in the final non-conference game of the season.

“As always, the Lone Star Conference is shaping up to be the toughest DII league in the nation. The newcomers that have been signed around the league will once again make the LSC as talented as many smaller DI conferences. We’re hopeful that our experienced returners will help our skilled newcomers adjust quickly to the physicality and the speed of the league. It’s going to be a very exciting year.”

At the turn of 2018, ENMU welcomes in-state rival, Western New Mexico on Jan. 2 and also hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State on the 18th and 20th.

The Greyhounds close out the home regular season schedule with contests against Tarleton and Commerce on Feb. 1 and 3 before wrapping up the home slate against Midwestern State and Cameron on Feb. 15 and 17.

The Greyhounds return six players from last season’s 13-15 squad. Head Coach Tres Segler led the Green and Silver to the most Lone Star Conference wins as a first-year head coach during the 2016-17 campaign. Additionally, Segler’s Hounds had the third-most wins under a first-year head coach.
