The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team started quickly against Texas Woman’s, but was unable to overcome a strong surge after the intermission, falling 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14). The Greyhounds fall to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
Freshman Jasmine Gannon paced the ENMU offense with 13 kills. Senior Brooklyn Biel also eclipsed double-digit kills, hitting .333 with 10 kills on the match. Jennifer Martinez and Natasha McClendon each turned in impressive performances in the middle. Martinez finished with five kills, four digs and three blocks while McClendon added four kills, 12 digs and four blocks. Freshman Marissa Ellis grabbed seven kills and 12 digs for a strong outing. Senior Alexis Aguirre distributed 26 assists and Andrea Aguilar snagged a team-high 14 digs.
ENMU rode the momentum off a quick start in the first set to establish a 1-0 lead, taking the first set 25-15. As a team, the Green and Silver hit .417 while forcing 16 errors from the Pioneers, holding TWU to a meager .033 hitting percentage. The second set was a back-and-forth affair with neither side gaining more than a three-kill advantage, but Texas Woman’s had the last word to take the set, 25-23. In the third set, ENMU was unable to recover after a slow start out of the gate. The Pioneers built an early 9-2 lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-19 to gain the 2-1 advantage. With the fourth set tied at eight, TWU closed out the match on a 17-6 run.
ENMU is back in action next Friday against Tarleton State in a match sponsored by Yucca Telecom. First serve against the Texanns is tabbed for 6 p.m. at Greyhound Arena.
