The Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team put together its best offensive performance of the season in its final home game of 2018 as the Hounds picked up a big 104-44 victory over Northern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

In the contest sponsored by Combs Property Management, the Greyhounds moved to 7-1 for just the second time since moving to NCAA competition during the 1984-85 season. The last time Eastern started a season 7-1 came during the 1992-93 campaign, a season in which Eastern went 23-5 and won its first ever Lone Star Conference Championship.

The Hounds clicked on all cylinders early, scoring the first 18 points through the first 6:25 in the opening quarter as senior guard Dasia Johnson and freshman guards Zamorye Cox combined to score 11 during the big run.

With 35 seconds left in the quarter, junior guard Tilasha Okey buried a three-pointer to give the Hounds a 26-6 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The Eagles managed to claw back in the second quarter, outscoring the Hounds by a 21-17 margin, but the Greyhounds still took a commanding 43-27 lead into the halftime break.

The Hounds shot 17-of-32 (53-percent) from the floor in the opening half, while limiting the Eagles to just 9-of-28 (32-percent) shooting. Cox had a big first half offensively and defensively for ENMU as she went into the locker room with 11 points on 4-of-7 from the field to go with four steals.

Much like the start of the game, Eastern came out of the halftime break red hot to start the third quarter. The Hounds opened the half with a 9-0 run over the first 3:15 off a pair of Treyanna Clay buckets and a three-pointer by Cox to go with an Okey two-point to jumper make it a 52-27 Hounds advantage.

The Greyhounds continued to build their lead over the remainder of the quarter as Clay’s layup with 52 seconds remaining gave Eastern its largest lead of the quarter at 73-37. The Hounds took a 34-point advantage into the fourth quarter at 73-39 as Northern New Mexico pushed across a score just before the end of quarter buzzer.

In the fourth, Eastern put together it’s most dominant period of play of the season, outscoring the Eagles 31-5. The Hounds rattled off 15 unanswered through the first 3:03 as five different players scored during the streak to grab an 88-39 edge with 6:57 to go.

Following an Eagles score with 6:30 left, the Hounds once again strung together a 13-0 run that was capped off on three straight three-point shots by Briana Rodriguez, Shelby Jones, and Okey to claim a  60-point edge at 101-41 with 2:51 remaining.

ENMU took its largest lead of the game with 37 seconds to go on a Rodriguez three-pointer to make it 104-43.

Eastern pieced together a strong second half, shooting a blistering 63-percent by going 24-of-38 from the floor and knocked down 10-of-16 (63-percent) of its three-pointers. The Hounds defense was just as dominant, holding the Eagles to just 8-of-37 (22-percent) from the field and 0-for-10 from the three-point arc.

The Greyhounds finished the contest with seven players scoring in double-figures, led by Okey who scored a career-high 19 points on a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-5 from three-point range to go with six rebounds.

Cox notched 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, going 2-for-5 from the three-point arc. Clay turned in her first double-double of the season with 13 points on 6-of-10 from the floor with a season-high 11 rebounds and four steals while sophomore guard Jena Mehlbrech also came away with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go with a team-leading four assists.

Johnson and Shelby Jones each turned in a 12-point performance while Rodriguez also finished with a career-high 12 points in just 11 minutes of action off the bench.

The last time the Greyhounds scored more than 100 points in a contest came during the 2011-12 season when Eastern broke the school scoring record and defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State 122-100 on Jan. 2, 2012 in Goodsell, Okla.

The Hounds will return to action on Monday, Dec. 17 as Eastern will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. for a 12 p.m. matchup with Oklahoma Christian.
