The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team opened up Lone Star Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday night inside Greyhound Stadium.
Freshman Victoria Nunez fired a shot across the box that was deflected in by a Lion player for an own goal in the 25th minute to open up the scoring in the second half. Senior Kaitlyn Caro extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 80th minute with a beautiful strike from around 40 yards out that pushed the Hounds forward to their first 1-0 start in conference play in over five years.
A very balanced match broke out in the LSC opener for both squads, as each team recorded nine shots throughout the contest. Keeper Taylor Jackson made saves on all three shots on target for the match and helped complete the second consecutive shutout for Eastern in a row.
Junior Morgan Zuniga led the way for Eastern New Mexico with four shot attempts, while classmate Samantha Fabela recorded the other shot attempt on goal for the Hounds.
Eastern New Mexico will look to remain undefeated in conference play Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a match scheduled against Texas Woman’s University.
