GOLDEN, Colo. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to top-20 opponents at the Oredigger Classic on Friday. ENMU fell to 13th-ranked Wayne State, 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 17-25, 14-25) and No. 19 Colorado School of Mines 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-13). With the setbacks, the Greyhounds fall to 0-2 on the young season.
Senior Brooklyn Biel tallied 16 kills on the day while sophomore Sarah Tuioti-Mariner added 14 and freshman Jasmine Gannon had 11. Biel hit at a .278 clip while adding six blocks in the two matches to open the season. Libero Andrea Aguilar picked up 26 digs on the day while senior setter Alexis Aguirre notched 33 assists.
In the season opener against 13th-ranked Wayne State, the Greyhounds gave the Wildcats all they could handle. Tuioti-Mariner had 11 kills in the match, but ENMU was unable to overcome a .028 hitting percentage with 36 errors in the match. Aguilar, the LSC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year added four aces and 20 digs.
In the nightcap, Biel added a team-high seven kills to go along with a .286 swing percentage and Gannon added six on a .238 attack percentage.
ENMU is back in action tomorrow at the Oredigger Classic, taking on Regis and 10th-ranked Augustana at 1 and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
