PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico closed out the 2019 regular season in the receiving votes category of the latest American Football Coaches Association Poll.
The Hounds received one vote following a 35-27 win over Western Oregon to enter the receiving votes category for the seventh time this season and closed out the regular season with an overall record of 7-4. Eastern New Mexico will await to see if they are awarded a bowl invitation for their play this season in the next coming days.
Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M both received a single vote in the poll while Tarleton State (no. 3) and Texas A&M-Commerce (no. 21) each received a ranking. Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce will face off with each other in the first round of the national playoffs as Tarleton State was selected as the no. 2 seed and Texas A&M-Commerce was selected as the no. 7 seed in Super Region Four.
The Greyhounds finished the regular season ranked second in all of Division II football with an average of 361.8 rushing yards per game thanks in large part to the efforts of senior Paul Terry, who ranked second nationally and set the single season school rushing record with 1,178 yards and finished the season with 14 rushing touchdowns. The Hounds ranked 14th in the nation with an average of 23.5 first downs per contest and led the nation in average time of possession with an average ball control time of 35:32.
Eastern New Mexico finished the year in fifth place in the Lone Star Conference standings with a record of 4-4 and took down the co-GNAC champions Western Oregon last Saturday.
