PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico cross country team wrapped up their final meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships at the 2019 FHSU Tiger Open in Hays, Kansas.
The full field featured 26 teams on both the men’s and women’s side and was split into four separate races. The Eastern New Mexico women’s team took fourth place in the second women’s race of the morning with a total team score of 110 points.
Senior Evaline Cheptoo finished in tenth place individually with a time of 18:35.2 to lead the Greyhounds. Junior Aminata Kenyawani finished just behind Cheptoo with a time of 18:43.5.
Cheptoo and Kenyawani were provided valuable support from juniors Neri Getraide and Kayla Sisneros, who both recorded top-30 finishes with times of 19:05.0 and 19:23.6. Senior Mason Swanson rounded out the counting times for the Greyhounds with a 46th place finish with a time of 19:34.2.
The Eastern New Mexico men’s team finished in 12th place in the second men’s race of the day, totaling 303 points. Junior Jessie Madrid paced the Hounds with a time of 25:39.2, crossing the finish line in 30th place individually.
Freshman Jon Fuentes recorded a time of 27:01.8 to team up with classmate Alejandro Chavez, who finished in 27:19.6, to record 53 and 58 points for the Hounds. Junior Toby Kirk and sophomore Shane Rinde rounded out the scoring for the Hounds with times of 29:38.2 and 29:57.0.
Eastern New Mexico will head to Silver City, N.M. for the Lone Star Conference Championships on Nov. 26th.
