The Eastern New Mexico baseball team ran into some rough innings in the series finale at Cameron as the Hounds fell 17-7 at McCord Field in Lawton, Okla. on Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (13-27, 1-15 Lone Star Conference) had the early momentum as Eastern pushed across a run in the first on a wild pitch that plated Paul Tapia and another in the second on a Tapia RBI sac fly that brought home Luidinson Hidalgo to make it a 2-0 game.
The Aggies (19-22, 10-6 LSC) answered back with a six-run third to take a 6-2 lead, but the Greyhounds were able to close the gap in the fifth.
After Tapia led off the inning with a single, he came around to score three batters later on Eurick Perez’s RBI double to center. Chris Padilla followed with a walk and both Perez and Padilla came across on a two RBI single by Joel Paulino, narrowing the Cameron lead to 6-5.
However, the Aggies put together a response of their own in the bottom half of the fifth with another six-run frame to increase their advantage to 12-5.
The Greyhounds were able to get two more back in the seventh on a Padilla RBI single and Ryan Anderson crossed home plate on a wild pitch, closing the gap to 12-7 before Cameron scored five in the bottom half of the inning to wrap up the series.
The Aggies tallied their 17 runs on 15 hits while Eastern finished with seven runs on eight hits and committed four errors.
A pair of Greyhounds finished with multiple hits, as Perez went 2-for-2 from the plate with a walk, an RBI and a run while Hidalgo slashed 2-for-3 with a run.
Eastern will return home next week for its home finale as the Greyhounds will take on Tarleton State in a four-game series. The Hounds will open with a Friday night game slated for a 7 p.m. start. On Saturday, Greyhounds will be taking on the Texans in a doubleheader during the J.P. Stone Community Bank Super Greyhound Weekend at 1 p.m. before closing out their senior weekend on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game.
