Hounds Fall In Season Opener At #11 Angelo State
Eastern New Mexico baseball had a tough day at the plate in its season opener as the Hounds fell 10-1 to #11 Angelo State at Foster Field Friday night.
The Greyhounds managed five hits but struggled to string baserunners together against the Rams starter Trent Baker who tossed seven innings and tallied ten strikeouts. Senior Ryan Anderson went two-for-three at the dish with a pair of singles as he also handled catching duties for the Green and Silver. Angelo State scored their ten runs on 12 hits.
The Hounds scored their lone run in the top of the sixth inning, set up by a standup double from sophomore Alex Kuhn who drilled the ball down the right field line. Two batters later, Kuhn stole third before crossing the plate following a wild pitch from Baker.
Sophomore Ethan Coombes started the game for the Hounds on the mound and fanned six batters in four innings. Junior Liam Sabiston entered in relief to start the fifth and threw three scoreless innings as he allowed just one hit and a walk.
The Rams got on the board with a run in the third before exploding for a five-run fourth as the home team took over the momentum of the game. ASU added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to halt a potential Greyhound comeback.
The High Plains squad will look for better results tomorrow in game two of the three-game series with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
