The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team opened Lone Star Conference play with a 72-63 loss at Texas A&M International University on Friday afternoon.

The Dustdevils opened the contest with five straight points before Eastern’s JaQuan Morris hit a three-pointer to get the Hounds on the board.

ENMU went on a 10-0 run (13:08-9:32) to gain a 15-10 advantage over TAMIU.

The Greyhounds finished out the final three minutes of the first half outshooting the Dustdevils, 6-1, to take a 30-21 lead at the break.

Eastern continued to stretch the advantage in the second half, gaining a 42-27 lead through the first five minutes of the second frame.

Texas A&M International battled back with a 12-0 (12:53-10:55) run to gain the 44-43 advantage with just under 11 minutes remaining to be played.

Niko Bossinakis then hit a jumper to put the Hounds back up, 45-44, before La-Quiem Walker converted a free throw to tie the game at 45-45.

The Dustdevils quickly took back the lead and managed to hold the Greyhounds off for the remainder of the contest to secure the 72-63 victory.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Kentrell Pullian led the Greyhound offense with 14 points. Morris and Yosnier Cobas each added 10 points.
  • Defensively, Cornell Greenwood paced Eastern with six rebounds, while Morris was close behind with five.
  • Greenwood also had a game-high five steals throughout the contest.
  • Jared Perry ended the game with a team-high two blocks.
  • For the Dustdevils, Walker led all scorers with 21 points, while Jermaine Drewey had 20 points. Walker also led the way in rebounds with 13 to notch a double-double.

  • Eastern shifts to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in LSC play. Texas A&M International improves to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
  • The Dustdevils hold a 5-1 series advantage, picking up wins in the last three matchups between the two programs.
