CANYON, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team’s run through the Lone Star Conference Tournament came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Hounds fell 2-0 to Angelo State in the Championship game being played at The Pitch in Canyon.
The Belles ( had the first opportunity to take the lead early in the first half. In the 15th minute off a free kick from the right side, ASU’s Megan Allen’s header toward the right side of the goal was saved by freshman goalkeeper Taylor Jackson, keeping the match at a scoreless tie.
Jackson once again prevented a scoring situation when a long cross from the right side toward the net was corralled by Jackson just before ASU’s Trenadey Scott could place a header on the goal.
However, Scott finally broke through for the Belles at the 43:28 mark when she received a cross from the left side from Chloe Souza and her shot from the middle of the box toward the left side post squeezed in, giving Angelo State the 1-0 lead going into the half.
Keyara Zuniga had the first chance for the Hounds in the second half, but her shot from the left side in the 47th minute was saved as was Morgan Zuniga’s attempt in the 57th minute.
Keyara Zuniga had another chance at the equalizer in the 62nd minute, but ASU keeper Kira Miller made a diving save toward the left post.
The Rambelles made it a two-goal lead in the 66th minute when a loose ball got past the ENMU defense and Scott tracked it down, firing a shot from the right side of the box toward the left post.
The Hounds last chance to cut into the lead came in the 90th minute, but Anahi Hernandez’s shot from the left side was saved.
The Belles outshot by the Hounds by a 16-8 margin, but both teams placed five on-goal.
Keyara Zuniga led the offensive efforts with two shots, putting both on-goal, while Morgan Zuniga had two shots, placing one on-net.
In goal for the Hounds, Jackson finished her season with five saves and conceding two goals.
Keyara Zuniga, Hayden Zuniga and Julia Tucker were each named to the All-Lone Star Conference Tournament Team at the completion of the match.
Eastern finishes the season with a 9-9-2 record and a 5-6-1 record in LSC play. The Hounds had improved mightily over last season, finishing with four more wins than 2017. The last time ENMU won nine games in a season came in 2014 when the Hounds went 9-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play. It was the sixth time in program history the Hounds recorded nine or more wins in the 16-year history of the program.
