Hounds Extend Winning Streak With 84-60 Road Win Over Angelo State
PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball secured the largest margin of victory on the road against Angelo State in school history with an 84-60 victory on Thursday night inside the Junell Center.
The 24-point victory for the Hounds marks the fifth straight win for the Greyhounds and eclipses the previous largest margin of victory on the road against Angelo State (12-7, 9-6 LSC) set back on Dec. 14th, 1996 in a 68-46 win for the Hounds (16-5, 10-5 LSC). Senior Natalie DeLonge put together her best performance to date and notched 21 points for the night, going 10-for-17 from the field on an evening in which Eastern New Mexico dominated the Rambelles in the paint from start to finish.
The Greyhounds won the rebounding battle by a final total of 51-to-34 and scored 56 points in the paint, while Angelo State was able to notch just 18 points in the paint for the entire contest. The Hounds limited Angelo State to a 28.6 percent (18-of-63) shooting percentage for the game and hauled in 13 offensive rebounds to total 18 second chance points.
The Hounds limited the Rambelles to just four made field goals in the first quarter to jump out to a 22-13 lead at the conclusion of the opening frame. DeLonge got her night started early with eight points in the opening quarter alone as the Hounds took the lead for good with 3:48 remaining in the first and maintained a lead in the ball game for a total of 37 minutes.
DeLonge and fellow senior Jasmine Williams continued to have their way underneath against the Rambelles moving into the second quarter as Williams recorded four of her 16 rebounds for the contest in the second 10 minutes of play to help extend the Hound lead by as many as 15 with a Zamorye Cox jumper with 1:35 remaining in the half to push the score to 42-27.
Williams notched her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points to go along with her 16 rebounds while Cox joined DeLonge and Williams in double-digit scoring with 13 points herself.
Eastern New Mexico never let the lead dwindle down into single digits for the remainder of the contest as they continued to score at will inside the paint, finishing the night with a team field goal percentage of 51.4 percent (38-of-74), their best shooting percentage of the season. The Hounds went just 2-of-16 from beyond the three-point line, but continued to move the ball inside to create easy scoring chances against the Rambelles.
The dominant win pushed the Hounds ahead of Angelo State in the overall conference standings with a record of 10-5 in Lone Star Conference play. The Hounds remain tied with Tarleton State for the fourth seed in the conference standings following the Texans win on Thursday night.
Eastern New Mexico will look to extend their winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon against #22 Lubbock Christian in Lubbock, Texas. The Hounds got the better of the Lady Chaps in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 16th with a 69-68 win inside Greyhound Arena and can narrow the Lady Chaps advantage for the third seed in the Lone Star Conference standings with a win.
