The Eastern New Mexico football team finished up the second scrimmage of the 2019 spring practice schedule and saw major impact from familiar and rising players throughout the game.
Those familiar names in juniors Paul Terry and Wyatt Strand were particularly effective, leading an offensive unit that totaled 697 yards on 105 plays in the offensive versus defensive format. Terry scored twice and totaled 87 yards while Strand completed all but three passes and tacked on 50 yards on the ground himself.
Despite the yardage totals, a Greyhound defense that has continued to play well and improve all spring dominated the early portions of the scrimmage while everybody was still fresh. With a few key contributors still on limited reps, a host of young defensive players continued to step up, including redshirt sophomore Roope Henry.
“Defensively I thought we played really well early in the scrimmage when we were fresh,” coach Lee said, “We are a little thin on the defensive line right now and those guys took a lot of reps tonight and wore down as the game progressed. I thought Roope Henry really made a few nice plays from the defensive end position and has had a really good spring, making some really big improvements.”
As that thin defense wore down the new faces that Greyhound fans can expect to see make big impacts inside Greyhound Stadium this fall continued to make plays and generate yards for the offense. Mid-year transfer Zach Fields had another huge scrimmage, hauling in seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown to lead an aerial attack for the Hounds that totaled 286 yards through the air.
Redshirt sophomore Nathaniel Bradford also shined for the Hounds in the later stages of the scrimmage, turning 12 carries into 75 yards and a touchdown. Bradford is one of many Hounds that will be vying for carries come fall in a backfield that continues to inherit more and more talent.
“I thought our fullbacks ran really tough with all four guys that took reps at the position finishing with over 50 yards on the ground,” coach Lee said, “Our quarterback play was also outstanding completing all but just six passes throughout the game. I was also pleased that we only had five penalties despite running over 100 plays.”
The Greyhounds will now break for spring break before returning to the field with five more practices before suiting up and splitting into two different teams for the annual spring game on Mar. 29th at 6:00 p.m.
