The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team closed out its four-match home stand with a 0-0 draw in Lone Star Conference play against Texas Woman’s University Sunday afternoon.
In the four home contests, the Hounds (3-2-2, 1-0-1 LSC) went 2-1-1 while remaining undefeated in conference play.
In the first half, the Pioneers (3-4-1) had a golden opportunity to take the first lead in the 23rd minute when the Hounds got called for a foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick for TWU’s Libby Murphy. However, ENMU freshman goalkeeper Taylor Jackson made a beautiful diving save in the right corner of the goal to keep the match scoreless.
Neither team could muster much offense in the first half as both the Hounds and the Pioneers managed just two shots apiece going into the break.
Both teams managed to get a little more momentum on the offensive ends in the second half, but neither team could find the back of the net. Jackson made four more second half saves to keep TWU off the board.
The Greyhounds had two opportunities late in the half to score a game-winner. The first came at the 86:57 mark when senior midfielder Bailey Bosley’s shot was stopped by TWU goalkeeper Jazmine Maxwell. Junior midfielder Samantha Fabela also had a chance to put the Greyhounds ahead in the final minute of regulation, but her shot was saved as well, sending the match into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Hounds managed to muster four shots on-goal, including a header by sophomore forward Jaci Sievers in the 92nd minute, but we’re unable to push across a game-winner in the 10-minute period.
Despite not being able muster a goal in the overtime period, the ENMU defense did its part as Jackson made three more saves to send the match into a double overtime.
The defenses for both teams once again managed to keep the offenses at bay as neither team managed to put a shot on-goal in the second overtime period.
Jackson led the defensive effort for the Greyhounds, tying a career-high with eight saves in all 110 minutes of the contest. It was the second time Jackson recorded eight saves in a match since tallying eight saves in the season-opener against St. Mary’s (Texas).
Fabela led the offensive effort for the Hounds as she mustered a team-high four shots, putting two on-goal.
The Hounds are set to hit the road for a four-match road swing as they will travel to Canyon to take West Texas A&M on Sept. 26.
