Obituary
Graveside rites for Heriberto “Berto” Meza, 76, of Portales, will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Fri., April 24, 2020 in the Portales Cemetery with Fr. Francisco Carbajal officiating. The rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM at the graveside by the Catholic Daughters. Ben Meza, Robert Meza, Angel Meza, Ramon Meza and Matthew Powell will serve as pallbearers. His other grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers. Due to the restrictions on large gatherings, the service will be live streamed on our website, wheelermortuary.net. It will also be made available on Berto’s obituary page on our website for viewing at a later time.
Heriberto Chavez Meza, known to family and friends as “Berto,” was born Mar. 9, 1944 in Cuchillo Plarado, Chihuahua, Mexico to the home of Margarita (Chavez) and Benito Meza, and died April 20, 2020 in Lubbock, TX. He and his family came to the United States in 1954 and settled in Pecos, TX. On april 11, 1962, in Pecos, he was married to Juanita Pena. In 1966, they moved to Arizona, where they lived until 2009 when they came to Portales to make their home. Mr. Meza was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed taking long walks every day. Watching his grandchildren participate in rodeo events, and traveling to visit family were among his greatest joys. He loved music and dancing, doing yard work and landscaping, and growing a garden every year. He especially like growing his green chile. Berto was very outgoing, and full of jokes. He also liked to work on his trucks, and care for his animals. He was a member of the Catholic church.
He is survived by Juanita, his wife of more than 58 years; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Benita and Luz Meza of Eloy, AZ, Orlando and Corina Meza of Toltec, AZ, Heriberto and Carol Meza of Arizona City, AZ and Mario Meza of Arizona City, AZ; two daughters, Olga Meza and her fiance, Artemio Ruiz of Grenville, NM and Angelica Moyer and husband, Andrew of Clovis, NM; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Antonio Meza and Estevan Meza both of Casa Grande, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Angel Meza who died Sept. 19, 2017.
